I quite liked Parker, who, for some reason, in Ghost Country, told Charlotte that he studied for the priesthood before becoming a tax inspector. And I thought, “Where does that line come from? Why did it survive? What’s it doing in the book?” So I thought Parker would be quite interesting, actually. That whole seminary business: I could start with him leaving. Then I came up with the idea of the Man Friday. I did a draft, and I thought it quite good.

And then I thought “Who’s this other character, the older guy?” I suppose we have to do a backstory for him and, suddenly, I realized, “Oh. I know exactly who he is. It’s Robinson”. It seemed absolutely fine to give him what I would call the Christopher Walken role, you know, where he comes in for two weeks, does the job, but is not the star of the show. read more
